Retirement takes months to plan. The date, the party, the travel, the budget. People research their next car more carefully than they research their Medicare options.
We are not judging. Medicare is genuinely confusing. But the consequences of not planning it are real in a way that a bad car purchase is not.
Missing your enrollment window by even one month can trigger a penalty that follows you for the rest of your life. The Part B late enrollment penalty is 10 percent added to your premium for every 12 months you were eligible but did not enroll. It never goes away. It compounds on top of whatever the premium is that year, including the increases that are already projected to nearly double by 2034.
Choosing the wrong plan at 65 is not like choosing the wrong Netflix subscription. You cannot cancel it next month without consequences. Some decisions, like moving from Original Medicare back to a Medigap supplement after being in Medicare Advantage, can require medical underwriting. Your health at that point determines whether you can even get back to where you started.
And the costs you are looking at today are not the costs you will be looking at in ten years. The plan that fits your budget at 65 needs to still fit at 75, when healthcare needs are higher and income is fixed.
None of this has to be overwhelming. It just has to be intentional.
The people who navigate Medicare well are not the ones who know the most about it. They are the ones who found someone who does and asked the right questions before the deadlines arrived.
That is what we are here for. Let’s make sure the Medicare plan gets as much attention as the party did.
