Added protection plans

Why we suggest added protection plans, and how they work

Medicare and your Medigap plan pay the doctors and hospitals. Added protection plans pay you, so you can cover the costs that come with a big health event.

1

Something happens

A hospital stay, a heart attack or stroke, or a cancer diagnosis.

2

The plan pays you

A set amount, sent to you. Not to the hospital, and on top of what Medicare and Medigap pay.

3

You spend it your way

Your deductible, help at home, family travel, groceries. Anything you need.

Why we suggest them

  • They cover the deductible gap.HDG caps your Medicare-covered costs at $3,050 in 2027. A hospital check can cover a big chunk of that in a bad year.
  • Big diagnoses cost more than the medical bills.Help at home, family travel and time off work don’t show up on a Medicare statement.
  • The HDG savings help pay for them.In our age-65 example, HDG plus the hospital, heart attack and stroke, and cancer plans came in about $40 a month less than Plan G.
  • Have a Medicare Advantage plan? Add them too.Advantage plans have copays and a max out of pocket that can reach $9,850 a year (2027). A $15,000 lump sum covers two years of a $7,500 max. Get Advantage quotes at AdvantageCombo.com.
  • Get them before you need them. These plans ask health questions, most have waiting periods and pre-existing condition limits, and prices are lower the younger you are when you buy.

Her plans were in place from 2025, before she needed them. Her medical bills stayed capped by her HDG deductible. She chose $10,000 for stroke; today we suggest $15,000. Benefit amounts depend on the plan and options chosen.

Short-term care

Everyone should look at short-term care

Medicare doesn’t pay for help with everyday things like bathing, dressing, cooking and rides to appointments. Short-term care pays you a daily benefit when you need that help.

⌂

Up to $2,100 a week at home

Hire an aide so you’re not leaning on family. The agency doesn’t have to be Medicare-approved, and family or friends who help can be paid part of it.

$

Up to $700 a day in a facility

Nursing home, assisted living or memory care, when you need more help than home can give.

1

Day-one coverage

The plans we suggest start paying right away, paid directly to you, on top of Medicare.

Switching Medigap plans usually requires answering health questions. Hospital, cancer, and heart attack and stroke plans are limited benefit insurance. They are not Medicare or Medicare Supplement coverage, they pay benefits directly to you, and each has its own health questions, waiting periods and exclusions.
